Biography:

Jean-François Toubeau received the degree in civil electrical engineering, and the Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering, from the University of Mons (Belgium) in 2013 and 2018, respectively.

He is currently a post-doctoral researcher of the Belgian Fund for Research (F.R.S/FNRS) within the "Power Systems and Markets Research Group" of the same faculty. He was a visiting researcher at KULeuven under the supervision of Erik Delarue and Kenneth Bruninx (from September 2019 to February 2020), and at DTU under the supervision of Jalal Kazempour and Pierre Pinson in March 2020. His research interests include decision-making in the context of power markets as well as data analytics.

Research description:

Jean-François Toubeau structures his research around two main axes: (1) optimization in electricity markets and (2) data analytics, with the aim of supporting the energy transition. With the increase and diversification of consumption (fostered by the penetration of electric vehicles and heat pumps) as well as the emergence of stochastic and intermittent renewable energy sources, power systems are more and more affected by long- and short-term uncertainties. It is therefore important to compactly but representatively describe this uncertainty (using, e.g., machine learning techniques that take adequately profit from the ongoing digitalization of power systems), in a form that is suitable to properly feed and guide subsequent decision tools (e.g. temporal trajectories for scenario-based optimization, intervals for robust optimization, etc.).
